Humana began in 1961, when two Kentucky lawyers started a new business in the nursing home industry. In 1968, the partners took a bold step in acquiring a hospital. By the early 1980s, Humana had grown into the world’s largest hospital company, owning more than 80 hospitals internationally. In 1984, as the need for outpatient care increased Humana created a group of flexible health insurance products. Today Humana offers a variety of health plans to individuals and groups in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.
Humana now insures more that 9 million members nation wide. Humana has one of the largest provider networks in the country. Members have access to regional and national networks that include approximately 400,000 doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and other health facilities.
Humana insures individuals and groups through employers. Their individual products are called the HumanaOne Individual Health Plan and the HumanaOne HSA-Qualified High Deductible Health Plan. The HumanaOne Individual Health Plan is a preferred provider organization, or PPO, in which the insured are covered by the insurance company when they go to a doctor within the preferred network. If the insured chooses to see a doctor that is out-of-network the insurance company will pay only a portion of the cost incurred. The HumanaOne HSA-Qualified High Deductible Health Plan is a health savings account. The money in a health savings account is not subject to income tax, but it may only be used to cover medical expenses.
Seniors seeking coverage can now look to Humana for options for health coverage and prescription drug plans. Humana offers Senior Advantage plans that cover a wide spectrum of health care costs. Seniors can also supplement their existing insurance with one of Humana’s prescription drug plans. Humana has made many alliances with major corporations that give its senior plans greater geographic presence and exclusive access to 20 million people with senior plans nation wide.
In an effort to better benefit their insured, Humana has made great strides in making many resources available online. These tools can assist members in the health benefit choices they make, understanding those benefits, and managing their overall health care costs.
Throughout Humana’s 45 years of experience, the company has proven that it embraces change and continually looks for ways to improve the service it offers to its members.
